Crown is a prosthetic device which is used to enhance the appearance of tooth. Crown cannot be taken out by self like dentures and only dentist can take it out.
Crown is used for following purpose
1) Cover and strengthen a damaged tooth
2) Shape an alignment and improve the appearance of tooth
3) Attach a bridge
4) Cover a tooth after root canal treatment
5) Cover a dental implant
How it Works
Teeth size needs to be reduced before crown is made. After reducing the size of teeth, impression of teeth is taken to make exact mold for crown. Impression of tooth and teeth above or below the damaged tooth is taken using a rubber material or digital technology. Impression is sent to lab for crown preparation. Sometime Root canal treatment may be needed before crown can be placed. Till Crown is made a temporary crown is put into prepared tooth. Once crown comes, temporary crown is taken out and permanent crown is cemented in the place of missing tooth.
DENTAL BRIDGES
Dental Bridges in District Heights MD, Hyattsville MD, Landover MD, Windsor Mill MD
Dental bridge is used to replace the missing tooth same way implant does. Unlike denture which can be taken out daily and cleaned, Dental Bridge is cemented and can be taken out only by a dentist. A bridge is made up of two anchoring teeth called abutment teeth and a false tooth called pontics in middle.
Gold, alloys, porcelain, or a combination of these materials can be used to make false teeth or pontics. Teeth size needs to be reduced before bridge is made. After reducing the size of teeth, impression of teeth is taken to make exact mold for bridge. Till Bridge is made a temporary filling is put into prepared tooth. Once bridge comes, temporary fitting is taken out and bridge is cemented in the place of missing tooth.
Care of Mouth after a Crown/Bridge Procedure
Crown procedure requires some precaution once procedure is performed.
1) Try to avoid using side of mouth with the crown.
2) Avoid chewy and sticky Foods like chewing gum, caramel etc. These foods can stick to crown and pull it out.
3) While cleaning your mouth, be careful.
4) You might find your gum tissue sensitive to some kind of food, to get relief rinse your mouth with warm water and salt
5) Do not bite your crown for few hours allow it to set so that cement can harden to it’s full strength
